Investment potential in an appropriate technology - cellulose ethanol technology

 According to an article in a Canadian newspaper, the Globe and Mail (see attached) by Simon Stuck, in May 2006, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., one of the largest American investment dealers and banks, announced that it has agreed to take a large minority stake in a Canadian alternative fuels company by investing $30-million (Canadian) in an Ottawa-based Iogen Corp., the first time such a significant investment has ever been made in the promising cellulose ethanol industry.

Iogen Corp (http://www.iogen.ca/), a biofuel firm, is a global leader in cellulose ethanol technology. Cellulose ethanol, which can be used as a fuel or a fuel additive, and is considered greener than standard gasoline or even grain-based ethanol, is made from organic materials such as corn stalks, straw and other agricultural waste. As you could expect, the fuel is considered a potential boon for farmers because it could create a viable market for materials that are now largely discarded.

Apart from its apparent environmental benefits and the fact that it is an alternative to fossil fuels such as gasoline, cellulose ethanol as opposed to grain-based ethanol could be very appropriate and one way through which poor struggling African farmers could get into the lucrative global fuel business. Just think of all the corn stalks, straw and other agricultural products that go to waste every year, while the farmers are left starving.
