Well-established Social-political and Economic Institutions Are the Answer
« on: March 16, 2006, 07:53:55 AM »

The answer to Africa's acute dearth of effective political leadership could be found in well-established social-political and economic institutions and related infrastructure. Expecting to find capable leaders to save Africa is expecting too much, it is like expecting for a Jesus-type leadership, a saviour, to deliver Africans from their problems.

Just like in any profession, African politicians are motivated to be leaders of a country to make lots of money and succeed professionally and personally. You should be very sceptical about those politicians who say that they are politicians because "it is their calling". The truth of the matter is that they are in it for the money and the power it brings. And as you may expect, once they taste the money and the power they will do anything to get more at any cost to heir fellow countrymen. Who can blame them, after all they are only human, unless of course they are "true leaders" (e.g. Jesus, Superman, Fidel, etc).

I agree with what many African political pundits have said that to prevent, or at least to mitigate Africa’s precarious position caused by its poor leadership, Africa should establish strong socio-political, economic and legal institutions and related infrastructure.

Examples of strong public institutions can be seen in the so called developed countries including U.S., Canada and U.K., which have seen their fair share of scandals involving politician’s misusing public office/funds (e.g., Watergate in the U.S., etc).
